Neboder Hotel is an integral part of the Croatian House of Culture Complex and with its 14 floors makes its tallest part dominating over the central part of Rijeka, which is oriented towards the sea. Its location and height give it a unique view of the Quarnero Bay, from the eastern part of the Istria semi-island and the Učka Mountain, across Opatija and the central and eastern part of Rijeka to Kostrena, Kraljevica and the island of Krk. The complex was designed by Josip Pičman, who was chosen among 59 architects. The hotel was constructed from 1929 to 1939. Originally it was planned to make a building that would be distinguished by many elements from the then European architecture. With its 14 floors, one more than the popular Rijeka Skyscraper, the building became a symbol of the east side of the town and is called the Sušak Skyscraper. With many modifications of the original idea, the whole project was completed in 1947 and the entire complex has been proclaimed a monument of culture. Neboder Hotel, though, not living a life of the 1950’s and 1960’s of the last century when it was the centre of the city’s night life, dominating over the city centre it is still telling passers-by that it is an inseparable part of the city life. After an extensive restoration, in 2007 it restored its splendour.
